Had the Challenger 1800 out, 2 times now. First time, noticed the port side motor, get up to 7k, then down to 3k, back to 6k, down to 4k..etc. So, docked boat, and did few things.
So far, carbs went thru, inline filters replaced, black fuel lines, with a few "factory" clamps on...
Took boat out today, and prior to today, read a few threads, mentioning same sinerio...one member found it to be a loose clamp on, return line, others found it to be a bad rectifier. So today, launched it, idles great, past wake zone, hammered it, and same thing, this time, with new fuel filter. So, cut motors, unplugged the red wires on rectifiers, hope'n that'll work, but still same crap, cut'n out.
Get'n fed up, on back side of lake, decided to ease back throttle levers, and to my surprise, eased the "starboard" motor to 6k-ish, but not over 6500rpm, and "port" side motor WOT, wouldn't you know, motor never "burped", stayed at 7k, until I gave starboard side, more throttle to pass the 6500rpm, then port side would fall off.
So, with this finding, I put it on trailer, and flushed out, then put compression tester on port side, to find readings to be at 10% difference, but ecceptible psi.
Wonder'n if, the port side, with 10% difference, is enuf difference to "cancel" gas flow to that motor, from the starboard side, which has great compression? Could that be possible?

Im having a similar problem, I think you read my post earlier about the loose return clamp. That did fix the problem for about a half hour at WOT but now i have the same problem but its intermittent. Im curious to see if anyone has some other ideas

Americanamafia.....that was not the post i wanted to read...:ack: Besides what i found today, ur idea was my next possible solution...thanks...lol

Have you checked the o-ring in the fuel filter/water separator? The surge you describe is a fuel problem, not electrical. It must be sucking air somewhere. Check your fuel system completely.

Thanks for response, stud...yeah, from what I gathered, IF was a electrical (rectifier) problem, it would more less "bog" rather than what its doin. Boats' wigg'n me out along with break'n my pocket, for all the gate fee entrances. Though I had it narrowed yesterday, until i brought the starboard throttle down 500rpm, and then the port side motor kicked/stayed run'n for 3 laps around lake, without a glitch at 7100rpm-ish.
The fuel system, besides rip'n thru carbs (with 2 cans ofcleaner for each carb) I did replace the fuel filter/seperator, to an inline glass filter. Reason is, thought previous owner had changed them out, they looked like the universal ones at AutoZone, AND not the actual ones you see in our ski's and boat's. So looked up diagram, and sure enuf, comes with these universal look'n ones.

Cant do much to it today (close'n on a house..:)), definetly rip everything out of fuel system, have a look......

Timmy,

what did you end up finding wrong?

Cant really pinpoint the problem, stud. I "gutted" the fuel system, and replaced everything. Started with fuel lines, even though, they were black, re-cleaned the carbs, installed new inline filters, and like the other poster said, re-checked/tightened all clamps everywhere. Made sure throttle throw was right, cleaned the arrestors, pulled baffle...etc, EVERYTHING, and walah...both motors pulled perfect.

To me, just didnt make sense, to do 1-2 things, if problem was the "other" thing.
