More Woes - '94 XP

I took my '94 Xp out the weekend before last - it ran fine for a while but then wouldn't start - this is the one that is hard to start when the engine is hot. Now the starter motor wouldn't even try to go. I could hear the solenoid clicking in & out.

I assumed the starter motor had given up the ghost so ordered a replacement - (which has arrived already! from USA to oz in less than a week.). In the meantime I pulled the old starter off and tested it - it is fine. So I opened the electrical box to find that the starter solenoid has cooked, but even worse than that the terminal that went to the starter motor had melted a couple of other wires - it had burnt out the earth wire from the MPEM and had melted through the clear rubber over the yellow/black wire.

I went about repairing this and sourced a similar solenoid from a local car parts store. As soon as I go to reconnect the battery the starter solenoid pulls in and the motor tries to start - even without the lanyard switch connected. I assume I've fried the MPEM - I've checked & rechecked all my connections and everything seems to be intact. It seems a bit bizarre to me because prior to repairing the earth lead from the MPEM the starter solenoid seemed to be clicking in only when the lanyard was attached and I pressed the starter button - this seems to indicate to me the starter section was ok.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Yes... the MPEM is gone. I bought an xp with the same issue last year. The solenoid shorted, and probably took the computer with it.
