I just purchased a 95XP 800. Pistons are destroyed, so I'm going to put Standard jugs/pistons on it. The engine dropped a Rave valve into the cylinder and had plugs that looked darker than they should be. I started disassembling the carbs and found some weird settings.
MAG: Low-out 1.5 turns, High- out 1.5 turns, Pop-off-37psi, HighJet-147.5, PilotJet-82.5
PTO: Low-out1.5 turns, High- out1.5 turns, Pop-off-45psi, HighJet-147.5, PilotJet-82.5
N/S both 1.5
The previous owner also ported the wider opening (on the side of the choke), as well as ground off the ring that sticks down into the middle of the carb body and has a port from (I Think) the High Jet.

My question to you all is: with the bigger PilotJet and the shaved off inner ring, what should I set my initial set-up to (low, high, and pop-off)?

Thanks!

Unless you can ID the carbs as being done by Group-K or Buckshot... I would ditch them. You may never get them to run properly. The secondary venturi is what really draws the fuel threw the main/high circuit.

Is there a way to do that? Do they mark the carbs somehow when they perform something like this? I don't think the ski didn't run, as the matter of fact, it failed because it melted the RAVES and one fell into the engine. Plugs were pretty dark, so I don't think it was b/c of lean condition... I'm going to try them before I get new ones. Hope like hell they're okay still...

Well....

If you know that carbs work... then don't mess with them since the mods done require their own settings. Sorry I can't give you more info, but what the last owner did is NOT a recommended mod.

Yea, I agree it was a dumb thing to do. I guess that's why the Highs were turned out 1.5 turns. I will put them back on as they were, except I will make pop-off pressures more even. They were 37 and 47... I'm going to set them to 40 and cross my fingers

Put those modded carbs onto my 97SPX (the one that had a horrible mid-range bog), and guess what? It revs right up! Going to go lake testing it this weekend. If the carbs DO actually work, I'm going to go with the mod and unrestrict the intake even more: going to use my Super-hi-flow flame arrestor, as well as delete choke plates and install a fuel primer kit. Wish me luck :) I'll let you guys know how it goes.

PS: someone mentioned to me that the mod may have been done because one of the venturis broke off. It can sometimes happen during particularly nasty backfires... I've never seen such things, but hey, I suppose it's possible.

Cool.

I know that mod will work, if it's done right. Like I was saying... Buckshot, and Group-K does it, but I have no idea how to tune it.

Just read the plugs, Make sure you aren't lean, and go run it.
