My Problem Child Ski today had the Magneto housing almost too hot to hold your hand on. A 2000 GTI 718cc. It's having proformance issues. I just rebult the carb and it's not sorting out yet. My VOM's battery died so at the time I could not get voltage reading.

Sounds like the stator is trying to do too much work. I mean the cover gets pretty hot but having a shorted regulator or stator could cause excess heat like this.

Yeah, I think you need to measure the system voltage while the engine is running, it should be between 13.8 to 14.2 volts or so. Meanwhile try disconnecting the red wire from the regulator/rectifier and see if the running issue resolves, this will tell you if the regulator is defective and regulator problems can interfere with the ignition system.

Love that 718 motor!

I checked all the grounds they are fine. I cleaned up and Dielectric greased them. It's a carb issue. Choke it and it takes off. I just pulled the carb off again and cleaned the hell out of it. Pop off is still good.
There is an old saying:
When hearing hoof beats, think Horses, not Zebra's!
This time I thinks it's a little of both!
