Hello All,
I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me.
I started my winterizing process yesterday and after pulling the stator it seams that the drive shaft has some play.
Is this normal? Is the stator supposed to remove this play?

THANKS!!
Cole

How loose is it? The gear is supported from the forward end of the pump with one bearing... and the shaft comes into it, and is posted in. SO... once the stator is off... there can be some movement. But... if it's rocking around, the bearing could be bad.

Did you drain the gear case oil yet? Was there any metallic color to it?

Yepp, they move a bit. The only one I've ever seen that needed attention was also leaking oil from the front seal...

Thanks for the info guys! I also went to my local MERC dealer yesterday and talked to the technicial. He said the same thing.
I didn't realize the stator would also provide support. Gear Oil was clean and the stator as well.

GEEZZZZZZZZZZ !!! Don't you trust us????? (sorry, just giveing you crap) It's good to know that you have a local tech that will give you info. Most shops won't.

The oil color/condition was the real key.

As far as the stator supporting the shaft.... yes... in the sportjet... there is only one bearing in the gear case... and the second (supporting) bearing is in the stator.
