Hello everyone,

I would like to get some advice on a 1996 speedster. Just got back from test driving it so im pretty excited about it. The boat had plenty of power and got up on plane no problem with three adults. I should also note I could get it up on plane with roughly 30-40% throttle. The boat itself is in nearly perfect condition. Almost no scratches and no hull damage anywhere. Trailer is also in nearly perfect condition. Literally the only thing I am concerned about is the numbers I got when doing a compression test on the motors. Here is what I did:

I actually ran two separate tests with two different compression testers and got the same results:

-Both tests were done by cranking the enging approx 4-5 seconds then looking at the reading.
-First test was engine cold and throttle closed. Got around 125 PSI on all cylinders
-Second test was today after the test run and engine warmed up (ride was approx 10 minutes). Throttle wide open got the same numbers - 125 PSI.

I should also note one engine was replaced and the other had a top end rebuild 2 years ago. He had the paperwork to prove it. It was done at a sea doo dealer in the area. It cost him $2,100. I am baffled why the engines have already dropped down that low after only two years. From what I can see the guy takes good care of it and is not rough with the motors.

Let me know what you guys think. Is 125 PSI acceptable? After reading posts on this site I am seeing conflicting information. Some say 120 - 140 is acceptable and others say don't buy anything below 140. Thanks for helping me out!

It's going to need a top-end soon. the Spec for the 720 engine is 150 psi. Anything over 135 is OK... but below that... then it's going to have a short life.

Also... the test should be done cold, with the throttle held open.

A top end 2 years ago could have gone bad. Boat engines are abused. High RPM's... and put away wet... it could have a short life. Also... the wrong oil in a seadoo engine will cause issues.

If they are properly maintained... the 720 engine should live +10 years.
