My beloved 1997 speedster is on the ropes engine-wise, and the local mechanic tells me the engines should be replaced with rebuilts.....cost $920 each from a national company.

No problems there.....question is how long should it take him to do this sort of job? I don't want good work for free, but I don't want to be robbed either.

What is a reasonable time for a competent mechanic to pull out two motors, clean 'em up to send the carcasses back to the rebuild people, do the install and a lake drive test and clean up the carbs?
I wish to pay fair money for fair service. What's a good range in hours for this deal?

thanks, Nathan Mayo

$950 per engine is not bad. He is probably getting them from SBT. Is he giving you a year warranty?
SBT sell the rebuild exchange for $750 plus shipping I am sure he gets a discount.

Now why is he telling you the engines are bad? If is low compression then you need to verify that. Maybe all it needs is a top end, that is not that expencive, and then he is overcharging you. He should also rebuild the carbs. New engines and old carbs will never run good.
