The previous owner(s) converted it from oil injection to pre mix. I think their conversion was just placing some decals on the hull indicating not to add oil into the oil tank but mix oil with gas. As far as I can tell the oil injection system is intact, in fact the low oil light comes on when the engine is started. My question is that because the low oil light is on does the engine go into limp mode? The engine start fine, but seems to lack the power compare with my Polaris SLX with the 1050 engine. Is their a work around to the low oil indicator other then clamping off the oil line(s) and filling the oil tank so that the sender will not indicate a low oil situation?

Do I need to add oil in the oil tank for the rotary valve?

You are in a dangerous situation. Your engine (the 657) has an oil bathed rotary valve for intake timing. It gets its oil from the large tubes running to the bottom of the oil tank and the sending unit. (one is a return/vent) If your oil tank is low or empty, you may be damaging your engine. You should check to see if the injection system is still in tact. It is under the carbs on the rotary valve cover. It is just a small pump with lines running to the carbs and oil tank.

There is not a "limp mode" that I am aware of for your year and engine combination. There is a rev limiting function in neutral.

Yes, you should keep the oil tank at least half full.

As far a a lack of power, it is only an 80hp engine on a nearly 1,000lb boat. Your 1050 is a much more powerful 650ish pound ski. Check the health of the engine with a compression test, you should see 150lbs, +or- 10lbs more being better health.

Here is a 717, but I think it should be similar if not the same.

Thanks for the info. I plan on removing the oil pump and bench testing it to see if it is still working. I also plan on replace all the oil lines and getting the oil injection working again so that I don't need to run premix. The oil lines that is currently in the boat are made of clear vinyl tubings. Are these the original lines or have someone replace the oil lines with vinyl tubings? Thanks for all the help.
