Jet pump cap plug ptfe sealant

I changed the jet pump oil today for the first time. Happily the oil had no water in it but was very black. Upon reinstall i did do a pressure test and held 15 lbs indefinitely. Of course as expected the oil kept settling and required a top off to the point that it was full.

My permatex ptfe thread sealant i used on the plug threads says to make sure threads are dry but i am sure there is some residual oil in the threads from the multiple top offs to get the cap full. Wasnt sure how to clean the threads without contaminating the new oil.

How do you guys normally tackle this step and should i expect my sealant to cure even with the possibility of some oil or do i need to re do it?

Just for fun some pics of my makeshift pressure tester. Surprisingly had everything on hand. Used the check valve from the oil tank to hold pressure ( replaced with a new one but after testing found the old one was fine )

Initially had to wrap my head around how to do this without going out for supplies and was wondering if a vacuum test would work the same as a positive pressure test? Or should that be avoided?

Wow, sounds like overkill, pull the cone, drain the oil, clean the o ring on the cone, just put marine grease on
It, (if you found water, then now you can replace the front seal.). No need at all to put anything on the the threads, , other than blue thread sealer.

Do you mean blue thread locker or sealer?

My manual ( which is usually overly vague ) says use permatex ptfe ( teflon ) pipe thread sealer so that is what i did.

Just apply blue thread locker, that's it. Your " o" ring may be covered in dry red sealant, you can buy a new one, or, I spray wd40 etc on the "o"ring, and slowly using my thumb nails, remove the red residue. Since you are going to remove your cone in the future, just put marine grease on the cone "o" ring, put a tad of blue on the threads, and hand tighten the 8 mm bolts.

Thanks for the response. Next time that is what i’ll do. Was just following the directions from my Clymer manual. At least everything seemed to work great on the water today.

You can download the factory service manuals for free. Just Google seadoo service manual. They are much better and more accurate than the Clymer manuals.
