Is my stator ruined?

I have a 96 XP that some friends borrowed and it took on salt water. We didn’t know towing makes it take on water in the engine so the bottom end is rusted solid. It's been sitting for a few years and I finally got a replacement engine to drop in there.

I pulled off the flywheel cover and this is what the stator looked like. Is that from wear and I need a new stator or can it be cleaned off?

You should be able to clean it off since it doesn't look like it was sitting in water.

Sounds good thanks. I remember when it ran that I had issues with the battery running low while riding it. I thought it was because it had a bilge pump that was running down the battery. But seeing this do you think it was this residue that caused that?

The battery 12V low problem was PROBABLY a bad rectifier, assuming the stator was putting out voltage that is. The RECTIFIER is what keeps the battery charge maintained.

Don't lend your toys to friends -

Meh good friends are worth more than toys. Mistakes happen. It wasn’t their fault they towed the jet ski back to shore and it took on water. I didn’t know and they didn’t know that towing would make it take on water in the engine. Expensive lesson but you live and you learn. They actually towed it because the jet ski died. So that voltage issue killed it lol.

I appreciate the advice guys. I’ll clean up the stator and get the replacement engine in. Then I’ll see if the battery is being charged. If not I’ll chase after the rectifier.

I know....you wouldn't think its feasible that towing a ski (without blocking off the water intake hose from the back), would potentially flood the engine...it just seems counter intuitive....but there are warnings about towing in the service manual (its funny, but I was just reading about it this morning in my manual).....STILL, happens all the time.

Good to have friends though...toys come and toys go...hopefully faster than friends....unless they keep effing up the toys  :p that is!!!!!! You obviously have patience and goodness. Good luck with the engine replacement.

Yeah, I read the user manual AFTER I posted it on here asking why it wouldn't turn over haha. I was younger back then and didn't understand mechanical components as much. You learn as you go along.

Thanks for the kind words and all your help.
