on a 98 challenger 1800, i had an overheating problem. the cooling hoses weren't tight enough, and came off. This is probably the stupidest reason why an engine is toast, I am aware of that.

Now one of the engines overheated to the point where it changed color. now it is a light orange-brown instead of grey. since the hoses were off there was lots of water in the bay so the crank case is fine, it's just the head cover and the top of the exhaust that have clearly changed, and to a lesser extent the mugs. I didn't push the boat and the engine stopped on its own. I was running it for the first time this year.

I took it off the lake thinking that the engine is totally fried, but to my surprise it starts and runs just like before. It has a slightly deeper sound than the other engine I find, but maybe it's just me. I didn't get the chance to check the compression yet (no gauge) but I am wondering if it is technically possible that the engine can overheat to that extent and still be ok. I personally think that the rings are finished at the very least, but i'd like to have some more experienced opinions on this before I pull it out.

thanks!
