I am in the process of replacing a melted 951 engine.
old story gray fuel lines, clogged internal carb fuel filters :(

I am of course replacing gray fuel lines.

The topic of discussion is should i use the carb internal fuel filters or should i just leave them out?

first thought the engineers that designed the carbs knows best, and i should put the fuel filters back in.

second thought, if a clogged filter will melt my new engine, what is the down side of leaving them out?

Those filters are the last defense for the small orifaces in yor carb. It takes more to clog the filter than it would those small orifaces. Put new ones in. If you don't want to spend the money clean the old ones in warm soapy water. (Slosh them around) and q-tips flush with alcohol and reuse them. Once you have replaced the gray fuel lines, they are nowhere near as apt to get clogged.

If it were me and they were bad enough to destroy the engine, I would put new ones in.
