If you plug a strainer or plug the cooling system, you'll overheat either way. The best bet is to always look back once and a while and look to see if water is coming from the little nipple. If your worried, flush out the cooling system with a garden hose after a few hours of use or if your in dirty water.

I agree, that you shouldn't use a strainer as it will get plugged with debris and it will cause an over heat condition.

A Groco water strainer...
this link is just an example...http://us.binnacle.com/p5110/GROCO-WATER-STRAINER-ARG-750-S-3/4-INCH/product_info.html

Universal Water Filter/Strainer Kit protects your intercooler from damage & reduced efficiency due to waterborne debris such as sand, seaweed, grass and pebbles that are sucked into the cooling system. Oversize "Super Strainer" mounts easily inline with cooling system and features clear filter cup for quick visual inspection.

It sure makes sense to be able to inspect and remove potential problems before your external intercooler gets clogged....but that's just me.
