Importance of gapping the spark plugs?

Today i head out to an island that is 2 miles away from the ramp. When i got there i ran the ski for a good time and then stopped. When i was ready to head back to the ramp the ski didnt want to start. So i changed the sparks and it started right away. I didnt gapped those spark plugs, what is the importance of gapping those sparks? Thanks in advance.

it's important for proper performance... but on more than one occasion, I have used plugs right out of the box. you won't hurt anything.
