Now that I think about it, I don't think the retaining shim went back in.

Bingo! Chester called it again. You have to install that ring and all parts, nothing leftover is the proper way.

With that shim in place, everything should line up properly.

This was a very interesting discussion. I'd be interested to know the total offset of misalignment and the location. Is it the faces or the counterbore where the cover fits? If the faces were aligned (flat where the rotary valve sits, I'd just machine the boss on the cover a tad. I'm not advocating that the job should not be done correctly as he left a part out. But that would be easily addressed. If this one surface is misaligned everything else is misaligned as well. Like I said.... very interesting to me as I am sure I will be doing more of these myself. Yes, not seeing the engine for myself I can't visualize the severity. If all things were good.... I"d be happy to machine the boss fit on the rotary valve for you. I don't see a problem with doing that as nothing fits on the diameter... the face is the important part. Perhaps you know a machinist. Not a real easy job but I just machined the surfaces to get the clearance correct and repair damage, to the surface of mine. I had to cut the o-ring groove deeper as a result to make up for the metal removed. I told my wife... I saved $25 the hard way. But... it is correct now.

The crank bearings will align the cases side to side or rotary valve face. The seal retaining washer will align the cases front to back and you can also use the mag housing to get them true. I have never had a cover not go on by doing it this way.
