Ignition issue

I have a 1994 Sea-Doo. It won't stay running. It cranks fine and catches but as soon as I release the start button it stops running. I tried running power directly to the starter and jumping it with my batter starter (also leaving the battery connected to its leads) and it started and stayed running. I'm not sure why this works. I figured all of the power should be tied together. Any thoughts/suggestions. Thanks. Chuck
