ignition coil

Hi guys. I feel pretty stupid asking this but here goes. I have a 1996 GTI and I was not getting any spark at the plugs. I dove into the manual and thought it was the coil. In my haste to check the coil I pulled off both plug wires to the coil. One plug wire was shorter than the other. The shorter wire was for the mag side cylinder. The longer one was for the pto side cylinder. I did not note what wire was where on the coil. Anyway, I ordered the coil and installed it. Afraid to install the wrong wire to the wrong cylinder I connected the plugs to the wires but did not install them into the cylinders. Instead I grounded out the body of both plugs to see if I can see if I was getting spark at the plugs. I am now getting a good spark. To install the right wire to the right cylinder I thought I'd rotate the motor by hand and bring up the mag side piston to the top of the cylinder. When I got it up to the top I saw the factory mark on the pto come to the top also. Then I thought I'd hook up my induction timing light to one of the plug wires. When I crank the engine and point the timing light at the pto, I thougt I'd see the factory mark on the top if I was on the right plug wire. Sure enough I saw the factory mark. This is where it gets weird. To double check I switch the timing light to the other plug wire and I see the factory mark on the top of the pto also in the same place. Do both plugs fire at the same time on this 720 engine? How do I know what wire goes to what cylinder? I'm hoping one of you veterans seadoo guys can help me.

Thanks in advance,
Seadoo Mike

I believe the top wire coming out of the electric box goes to the mag cylinder. I'll run outside and check my 720 to confirm

So it doesn't matter which wire connects to what cyl? Is this the same for the 657? racerxxx

Yep, both spark plugs fire at the same time, it makes no difference which plug wire goes where.

Update...A MILLION thanks to all of you on this forum. A special thanks to you guys that answered my question and a personal thanks to racerxx and Loudoo. I work nights, posted this question then went and took a 4 hour nap. I woke up to the answer went into the garage put my ski back together and fired it up. Runs great. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you guys. I'm not afraid of work and you guys have saved me a lot of money.

I see guys post the same questions here if they don't get an answer right away to their question the first time. All I can say is have some patience (or take a nap) and SOMEONE will answer the question. If it doesn't happen right away it eventually will. We all are here to help, from Mods to other members, we're all on a level playing field. In time as YOU learn things you will hopefully chime in and help someone down the road. Thank you for finding the BEST SEADOO forum on the interwebs!

Now, if I could take a nap.......nah, plenty of sun light still out there.
