How many people have had an engine replaced?

The repair guy still has my GTX DI in his shop. Ended up with SBT engine, reworked prop, new motor mounts, after everything was installed was told the MPEM was bad. Ordered an MPEM from eBay for $550 and the guy has it now. Hoping he gets it installed this week and I'll finally be good to go. If I had of known all of this I'd just went for the monthly payments on a new ski. Another life lesson learned the hard way.

I want to get the engine quick. I'm trying to enjoy the ski this season. From what I'm hearing SBT is the only choice for a quick shipment. My goal is to get the engine in and the ski operating by the end of the month.

based on that statement, IMO SBT is pretty much your only option unless somebody has a good used one or a new one laying around and listing it on forums/fleabay.

SBT has earned a mixed bag of reviews, but I haven't read a single report about warranty complaints.

ya, by the time you pay for engine/prop/mounts/mpem, you would have been better off selling off the pieces and starting with a new or good used ski. I am not a fan of buying new, too dam expensive IMO, but I'm a cheap azz and would rather invest 3-4K in a good used model and fortunately I've had good luck going that route, it depends on the individuals financial situation I guess, and my wife would shoot me if I brought home a new model with payments.

Purchased a used 99 XP that ran excellent until.......... Probably got 20 hours out of it. No idea how many hours were on it. Turned out it had an SBT. Crank seal got loose with the expected lean seisure. Actually if I needed another motor would look at SBT as they are relatively inexpensive. As fas as replacing the engine there are no options in my area. The local dealer will not work on anything 10 years old. Think if your somewhat mechanically inclined, own a few tools, and with this forum you can swap out an engine.

not quite a piece of cake with a DI, not as simple as a carbed engine, also its critical to determine what caused the failure in the first place, so some expert diagnostics would be needed to make sure your not replacing the new engine a few hours after completion.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking the engine seized due to moisture. Don't know about the MPEM. The mechanic said that the MPEM has a battery that maintains the memory and if goes the MPEM is useless. I don't know if this is true. I'd like to hear more thoughts on the subject.

someone that is more familiar with MPEM failures will chime in there, (Tonka?) but in my personal experience, I have yet to run across a single bad mpem, and i've parted out a LOT of ski's.

I might suggest spending $10 to flat rate the 'bad' mpem up to Tonka to have him test it to validate your mechanic's statement, its a very expensive part ( I think the 02' that I sold went for about $350)

OMG, he's had it for 9 months?!!

Wow!
I had NO IDEA getting an engine rebuild was such an ordeal! Seems like a very limited-option environment for this service.

It can be damaged if done from a running vehicle.

Rob

And why is this, exactly? I've seen the warning decals to not 'jump' the battery whilst installed. I've got one of those portable power unit devices that can boost a battery...I assume one can use something like this to "jump" a dead 'ski?

Yes this guy has had my SeaDoo since last June. I'm going to give him a few more days but I really need to see some progress soon. It didn't really bother me during the winter but it's starting to warm up now.

boy, I must be the most impatient MOFO on the planet or your the most patient and appreciated having it out of the garage for a spell.

If I drop it off in june, 3-4 calls later and i'm picking it up in july even if its in a box. Obviously this ski sat in a corner untouched for 6 months +, not even close to the level of service i'd accept. Not even sure that i'd wait that long even if it was a relative doing the work for free !

It has to do with the other vehicles charging system (alternator) while it is running and you are jump starting it can damage MPEM in ski.

honestly, its generally very str8 forward. If you had a credit card, the proper tools or a qualified mechanic, today is the 19th, no reason you wouldn't have a running ski before April 1, assuming you go the SBT route. (certainly that is reasonable for a carb'd ski, I detest DI's but only because I don't understand them, so add a week for those buggers)

Many years ago, when I was into old British sports cars, a local shop had one of my cars for over 14 months. After being away from my garage for that long, it was almost like I'd forgotten I even HAD it, you know? Sort of like, "Oh! I DO have that car still...somewhere."

In most circumstances, it is just unacceptable for a repair shop to take more than a few months...TOPS...to do most repairs, unless previously agreed to.
