How hard should it be to turn the impeller...

Replaced the wear rings in my boat tonight. I know why I couldn't get up on plane now. They were completely worn out. When I put the pumps back together, before I put oil in them they turned freely. After putting oil in, they were very hard to turn. Is this normal?

It should be very hard to turn the impeller, I'm assuming you are talking about turning the impeller by hand. It's a direct drive system so if you try to turn the impeller you are turning against the compression of the engine. I guess if you removed the spark plugs you might be able to turn the the impeller by hand but it would be difficult. If they turned freely it would be a problem with your carbon seal or the drive shaft worn out.

After thinking about your question, I'm thinking you might be talking about before the pump is re-installed, connected to the drive shaft. If this is the case, yes it should be fairly easy to turn the impeller. Check to see if the impeller is hitting the new wear ring and if the impeller is centered in the wear ring. It might be slightly harder to turn because of the viscosity of the oil, but it should still turn freely.

When both were off they were very easy to turn by hand before I put the cone on and oil in. After installing the cone and putting the oil in they were very hard to turn. I used the seadoo synthetic pump oil and filled them completely.

No the impellers should turn easily.

A couple of things to check.

1. Is the impeller hitting the wear ring?

2. Are you sure that you installed the bearings and washers the same way they came out? If you're not sure you may want to download a manual. There should be a little back and forth play, not sure what the spec. are but maybe 1/16", the specs. are also in the manual.

If the bearings are worn you might want to get a rebuild kit, they're about $50.00 each.

Everything went back in the same way it came out. Like I said both impellers were turning freely until I put the cones on and oil in them. I filed until the oil reached the top of the hole. I did let all the air pockets bubble out. Is there such thing as putting too much oil in the pump?

The impeller is not hitting the wear ring. There is just a little back and forth play which I read is normal.

I have never heard of getting too much oil in the pump. However normally it's not possible to get all of the air out. So you might want to try letting a little of the oil out. Are you sure you are using the correct oil, SeaDoo makes an oil for 4-stroke also, but its almost like a grease. I use Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90 GL5 in mine.

I'm afraid I don't have anymore answers, try PM'ing Dr Honda, maybe he can help.
