How do you jump a starter relay on a 97 XP???

TRYIN TO JUMP MY STARTER RELAY ON MY 97 xp. i think it is bad. if i can start it by doing this it means it needs to be replaced. correct?

take spider clips connect one to the power side of the solenolid and (large red cable that runs to batery ) and connect the otherside on the ignition wire ski should turn over if not connect 2 large posts( large red wires together with jumper or plyers ski will turn over
