What are some reasons that water would be in the roary gear cavity? The engine was rebuilt, and converted to premix. The oil tank had lines going from and to the roatary gear. The new engine has maybe 4 hours total on it so it is barely broken in. It was winterized and fogged according to the shop manual. Now why would I see a clear fluid in the returm hose goin back to the oil tank? My initial thought was that it was fuel. But it looks like water. I drained the oil tank and gently blew air into the supply hose to get most of the oil out of the cavity. Now I just looped a hose and filled it with gear oil. It starts and runs but I want to see if it gets water in it again. Is there a cooling jacket close to that area that could be leaking into that cavity? I can't remember.... any help would be great. I have run it for a few minutes on the hose to see if the oil turns white again. It did a little bit but I think maybe either I didn't get it all out or it was just air mixing with the water. Please help !!!!

In the yellow engine, there is a cooling jacket in the engine case. (newer engines do not have it) BUT... it's not exactly by the RV cavity. I would think, if you have a crack in the case... it would be leaking into the crankcase, below the piston.

All I can say is to make sure it's clear, and take it out for a run.

Actually... after thinking about it.... there are 2 types of yellow engines. There is one return that bolts to each side of the case, and bridges the RV cavity. BUT... there are some that have the water passage built into the engine case, and the return, is just a cover for this extra cooling passage.

IF... you have the second kind, then yes... you could have an internal crack (from improper winterizing) and that would put water directly into the RV gears.

Well this is the one that I was having carb issues with so this newly rebuit engine has maybe three hours on it...not even broken in yet. It was fogged and winterized propperly. I was hoping it could have just been condensation from in the oil tank. (it is converted to premix and looped to the oil tank. With the oil tank only being maybe 1/4 way full I figured over the winter that maybe there was condensation built up and water being heavier than oil that the water would find the lowest point which would be the rotary gear cavity. I blew all the contaminated oil out of the rv cavity and flushed with wd 40. Then I filled the tubing with some gear oil and eliminated the oil tank and just looped the rv lines together. I guess I will watch and see if I get more milky oil in the lines . I just thought that it looked like a lot of water for it to be condensation, maybe about 2-3 table spoons worth...but it looks like more when it is in that tubing. I have the yellow 587 with the water cover on the exhaust side of the engine if that makes any sense. Yep... that's the cover. If that had an internal crack just behind that nipple... it would leak into the gears.

You may want to take off that cover, and if you see a crack... fill it with JB weld.

Hey Dr. Honda... I have been doing some more research and that area where the crack probably is, is some sort of a freeze plug. So it would need to be repaired as you said with epoxy or jbweld or marine tex. Do you think if I went to Auto zone and bought that Bars freezplug fix in a can that it would work? I am trying to think how this happened or is it just bad luck. But the skis were stored on the trailer nose down. I have been thinking maybe the water that was trapped in there had no where to go? If the trailer and skis were nose up maybe it would have better drainage. I coould put the freeze plug fix stuff in the oil and then squeeze the oil in the tube and run it...maybe to get through the summer and then rip that engine back out and fix it right in the off season

NO BAR'S LEAK FIX !!!!!!!!!!!!! that little can of rabbit turds doesn't work. If you put it in the oil... it will plug up the oil injection, and it will be death to the engine.

Just put some marine tex around the plug. (unless it's totally rotten) If it is rotten... replace it.

I was not refering to the bars radiator leak...They also make a product for freeze plugs. I am premixing so I have no oil injection lines.... If it is not recomende then I guess I have another summer of not riding...I don't have time to pull this engine again. I would probably take a sledge hammer to the whole thing...I am that disgusted.

to fix it right, I will need to remove the tune pipe, exhast manifold, starter, and water inlet cover....then Hope I can see the area that needs the repair.... And that is hoping that is where the water it is coming from. I am pretty sure that is it as there really isn't any where else it could come from.

So,..... if I put the freeze plug repair stuff in the oil it would be ok maybe?...since there is nothing to clog up..It works on aluminum engine blocks.....I am hoping it was just condensation from the empty oil tank over the winter...and all this is me overreacting......

So I am starting to believe that nothing is leaking but it was just condensation in the oil tank that leaked into my rotary gear cavity. The tank leaked all the oil out but the rotary tubes were still conected. So once the oile was all gone, it was just a big empty tank with condensation in it. I have run it several time and I don't see any more water so I am keeping fingers crossed. Been pretty busy and I am making progress on several issues. I will not wash them till it runs trouble free.

how many times have you had it out riding since you took it out of winter storage ?
