we have a 1996 spx has ran well all summer until recently have had two issues, the clamp broke between the exhaust and water box/muffler, i fixed that, the tank is about 1/4 full of water, i believe that's ok, please correct me if i am wrong, now we could start the pwc and it would idle great and as soon as you get on the gas it bogs out really bad, pulled the plugs and they were black, replaced plugs ran perfect the whole day, next day bogged again, pulled the plugs and the new ones were burned up again??? to much fuel?oil?something with the water in muffler? any idea's would be most appreciated, thanks

Can u describe the plugs? Are they goopy/gummy? Are they wet? What color? Maybe a close pic if you could? I would check/clean your exhaust valves. They may be sticking closed.

Be sure you use the correct spark plugs...NGK BR8ES gaped to .021-.024"

How good is the compression too by the way...it should be ideally 150psi per cylinder.

You also should add your year and model to your avatar for future or questions problems. Use mine as an example.

The 1/4 tank of water in the water box is not a bad thing...the engine pumps cooling water into the exhaust to cool it and so that tank holds water all the time because it is constantly coming from the engine. Any surplus is blown out with the exhaust out of the exhaust port....that is why when you ride along and look back, you see what looks like white smoke coming from your exhaust and a stream of water...that is the mist of the exhaust gases along with water to cool the exhaust coming from the engine and through all of that exhaust componetry and water box, then out the rubber hose to the back of the boat. You will see some small water lines running to the exhaust pipe after where it is bolted to the exhaust manifold and this is to cool.

plugs are dark and burned, a little wet as they should be, they are the correct plugs, if we put new plugs in it runs perfect for a day, until they get lit up again, I will look at the exhaust valves this weekend, any other idea's on things to test? thanks everyone
