Guage removal

I have a 96 SPX and also a 96 Challenger. I need to replace one guage on each (fogging and corrosion).

When I tried to look at each one they are buried inside (especially the challenger).

So here are my questions.

1. Do they just screw in and out or is there a backplat of some kind holding them in?

2. One of the replacement guages I have does not have the plastic/rubber connector plugs just what look like the soldered on male ends. It there a trick to getting off the old plugins and using them again with the new guage?

1) the gauges have a ring on the back that hold them in. That ring is like a big nut. Just reach in, and unthread it.

2) some gauges don't have a removable set of wires. The easy way to deal with it is to buy a pin tool and take the plug off so you can pull the wires though smaller holes.

I can understand that on the SPX. Thank you.

Found the pin removal tool. Thank you for the tip on that too! :)

But the guage thats fogged on the challenger is the Fuel/Oil guage. It on the little bubble over the steering wheel. Do I need to take that off? If so how I did not see any screws and all I can feel from the back is a hole the wires pass through main console from the piece in front.

I did check the manual and could not find any references to it.

OK... yes, you have to remove the steering wheel, and the little pod to get the gauge out.

To get the wheel off:

There are a couple screws behind the wheel that hold the center cap on. After that is off, there is one nut holding the wheel to the shaft. The shaft has a taper in it, so it will need a few whacks to get it to pop off. (or use a puller)

To get the pod off:

Open the hood, and remove the bucket. There is 4 screws holding it on. You will see them once the bucket is out.

Hope that helps.
