GTX Millenium Edition,engine rebuild time

Hey guys,

Well after 5 years of ownership my GTX 951 carb seadoo needs some love. Found water in one of the pistons, so this winter is a full strip and rebuild. Fun times!! I would love any advice on the minimum acceptable skim level on the head ? And if needed the actual head cover lol if thats the name? The surfaces are in need of refreshing, so figured skimming both would be safer, but don't want to mess too much with altering compressions, so anyguidelines would be greatly appreciated :thumbsup:

I know it seems like a fun project to rebuild the engine on your ski. But the reality is it is beyond the typical home mechanic repair. You will spend more on parts, tools and machining than what it costs to exchange it for a ready to go reman that comes with a 2 year warranty. Seriously consider using SBT. You can save even more by using a reman shop like SES who will actually rebuild your engine but with a longer turn around time. They also back up their work with a 2 year warranty. If you decide to rebuild it yourself you can find a lot of good help from the pros here on the Forum. Good luck.
 
Cheers for advice Adam, certainly hear where ya coming from. Luckily, this is not my first engine rebuild, mainly cars for me, so tools and workshop already in place. 2 stroke engines are nice to work on, considering theres no cam, nasty springs etc. This will be a refreshing rebuild. So ill dig around for previous rebuilds, with tolerances used for skimming, but if anyone has any info ref a safe skim level, woukd be greatly appreciated. Cheers all
 
It's a bit more involved than a car engine, you'll have to press the crankshaft parts together. But, you can find the factory shop manuals with a quick google that will give you all the specs you might want
 
i'd skip skimming the head, if its pitted or damaged just replace the head, its reasonable. its one small part in the big picture.
sounds like you have top end issue, and maybe time to swap out the crank while your at it.

yes, pulling the 951 is a pain, the dam pipe is a killer, carbs are stubborn, it barely slips out of most hulls, very little wiggle room.
 
Cheers guys, might be time to purchase the ATA head, saves me messing with skimming. Thanks guys, all welcomed tips and advice :-)
