gtx cavitation

Yesterday my gtx started cavitating out of the blue. We had been riding for about 6 hours pulling tubes and general riding. Then all of a sudden it when it hit 5000 rpm with the tube hooked up it revved to 8000 and stopped moving. Unhooked the tube and it would do ok with no noticable cavitation but was lacking on power. it was struggling to get to 50 and was taking off slow. The engine wouldnt rev as fast as it had been. It started acting like the fuel system was stopped up but I just cleaned the carbs and replaced all the fuel lines and have only had out once besides yesterday and it ran great. I did notice that it was harder to crank than the last time i took it out and as the day went on it got a little worse. Im going to do a compression check tonight and Ill post that.

Compression is good at 155 and 157

Look inside the grate underneath the ski, better yet remove the grate and feel inside the blades of the impeller. Look for weeds, fishing line, tow rope remnants, etc. You can flush it from the back end of the jet with a hose...non-running engine.....with neg battery cable removed for safety.

Could also be a bad wear ring....check the clearance between the blades and the rings... .40 mm is the most allowed

Ok checked out the ski this morning and nothing seems to be caught up in the impeller. THere is more clearance on one side than the other but both were within specs. I also looked at the carbon seal and boot and the clamp holding the boot to the seal broke off. I thought that was wierd and what could have caused a clamp to just break. everything else looks in place and the seal is pushed against the washer. Would that cause the cavitation? Here is a pic of the shaft.

i experienced cavitaion on an 04 gti rfi it drove me nuts until we changed the carbon seal. I would put a new clamp on and give it a try they are cheap. If it is still having problems replace the carbon seal next.

yeah thats the logical place to start, i was just wandering what could have caused the a clamp to pop off like that. I didnt know if I should be looking for something else.
