Ground wire?

Well i bought this ski a few weeks ago. It didnt have a battery or starter on it. I have read a few post that say there is a small black wire that goes from the battery to the engine block by the starter and a few post say there is a black wire that goes from the mpem to the battery. This is a 97 sp with a 717 so i would assume i need to wire up something that goes from the battery - to the starter for a ground. Is this right or not. My starter is supposed to be here next week so i want to get it all ready.
