Took ski out for a ride to test new steering cable and heard a nasty grinding noise from impeller. Brought ski back in and there was a burning smell coming from nozzle. Anyone have a clue? Wear ring, jet nozzle pump oil? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sounds like you just sucked something in there, may just need a cleanout.

Lou will kill me for being a smartazz, but I cannot help myself for asking (especially looking at your avatar) what you are Dooing sniffing at the tail-end of your Doo?

Keep smiling and have fun.

Probable pump bearing. Either way, unless you see something very obvious in the impeller area, you have to pull the pump.

Easy to do, less than 20 minutes.

If the pump was leaking oil, you can smell it . That stuff stinks. It is gear oil. Has to be the worst smelling oil when changing.

BTW, thanks for all the replies. Have my work cut out for which I need to purchase a ton of little things also. Locktite, gear oil, etc

check the drive seal boot. It may be spinning on the thru-hull fiberglass snout. (remove PTO cover)

Now that you mentioned that, I had that cover off while running fresh water thru ski but did not look at that boot thou. Just talked to a Seadoo mechanic, said change wear ring and pump bearings. Might as well go all out. Will double check that boot. Thanks

look at ODSparts.com. They have kits to rebuild the entire pump, seals, bearings, wear ring, oil, etc... Reasonable prices, and quick shipping.

I make the set of removal and installation tools for the pump bearings and seal. Makes the job easy and takes out the guess work of setting everything to the right depths. Many members have purchased, if your interested check out the thread in the classified section.

Are these the same for the 4-tec pumps?
