Got a Problem... Dunno What to Do... - 1998 Challenger 1800

We were boating yesterday and my wife hit the dock or something and it messed up the fiberglass.

What should I do? Leave it alone or do something about it. I don't know if it means much or if there is actually a hole. I know it is a dumb question, its just that I'm clueless when it comes to this.

And if I need to take action, what do I do?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Ouch, that is a hole that needs fixed. If you left that boat in water overnight, I bet it would sink by the morning. That is going to be an expensive fix. I would find a local shop that does fiberglass repair. Some auto body places will fix boats. I have done the gel cote and fixed cosmetic stuff that is no big deal and it was easy. That has structural damage, not just cosmetic. Others on here say you can do it yourself, so if you are really handy you can look into it. I would expect that to easily cost over $1000 to have a shop fix.

wow, looks more like it was unloaded on the concrete and slid into the water. Sorry dude, but I'd let it sink in deep water and call the insurance company.

That brings up a good point. If you have insurance, it would be worth it to file a claim. They would cover that. If you dont have insurance, you might wanna look into it next time. It is only a few hundred a year and well worth it.

I have done fiberglass repair on my old vett and other stuff learned a ton from a friend that taught me how. If you do not know how there are books on it. You can do it yourself but take your time and read as much how to as you can. A shop will run 1000+ for that.

Definitely go through insurance. If you don't have insurance, after this incident get insurance. I pay $267/year for my Challenger 1800 and I only have 4k coverage. For the price, Insurace is definitely worth it for these kinds of things. Plus, they will pay towing if you need to tow your boat to the trailer.

i think the more important part of the insurance is the liability coverage, just in case....

Wow.....did she hit the dock or park on it??? Defiently get some insurance

yea, sure looks like she drove the boat right up the ramp. I've been trying for a couple years to get my wife to learn to drive the boat but she is afraid, after seeing these pictures maybe it's better that she doesn't.

I took one of the skis out on the lake a couple days ago and was the only one on the lake except for a boat at the other end of the lake so I'm riding along at wot watching the tach and speedo to see how it was performing after cleaning the carbs (not paying much attention to the water cause I know there is noone else on the water) and I glance up to see to my surprise that another boat had just slipped out of one of the no wake zones directly in front of me about 100 yards. Another couple seconds watching the gauges and it wouldn't have been pretty...

Who has full coverage on a 13 year old boat?!?!.Crazy....

That's a tiny hole, I wouldn't even worry about it till after the season.. I'd put some 3m 5500 sealant in there, and then search the web/you tube on how to fix it with epoxy & either gel coat or paint, it's a pretty simple repair. You're not going to spend $1000 repair for a $4000 boat, not worth it, it's on the bottom when no one will ever see it.. :)

And to save your marriage, some of that damage was probably already there, you probably just noticed it... :)

comprehensive coverage is optional, but personally would never run without liability insurance.

You must not know much about boat insurance. I would rather not lose my investment if something happens to the boat. I also dont really feel like losing my house and everything I own if I accidentally hit someone else.

There are tons of benefits to insuring a 13 year old boat. Between what i paid for it and the 3 grand i have added in mods, i would hate to be out almost 10 grand if it sinks. I have it insured for an agreed value of 8500. I am also covered for 300,000 in liability if i hit someone else. It also covers 1 million in cleanup costs and EPA fines. Ever seen the costs involved with sinking a boat and having oil and fuel spills?

Lastly, it even covers catastrophic engine failure. If the oil tank falls apart and i run out of oil and lock up both motors, the insurance covers it.

All that for the super low price of 280 year.

Back to the "tiny hole". Did you look at the first picture? That is not really just a tiny hole that can be filled with epoxy. There is structural damage that needs to be repaired correctly with fiberglass mat. It just happens to be on the part of the boat that will be striking other surfaces almost every time it is out. I almost guarantee if you fill it with epoxy and just cover it up, it will fail again and he will have the same problem again.

I have full coverage oon my 12 yr old boat. 226 bux a year. If I blow it up, sink it, or it catches in fire, at least I can salvage the 6k agreed upon price.

Yes, I looked at the picture and that's a small hole, here's mine that I repaired last year. It was about 1 foot long hole/crack before I started cutting out all the damage, even larger after..The damage from on the OP is probably from the dock or trailer, that area is normally out of the water when on plane anyways..

Wow, I do have fully coverage insurance on my boat, i guess I got lucky I pay $150 a year, with liability and full coverage at $6,000 agreed for only $150 a year like I mentioned.

Secondly, to me that is not a big hole, now PARROTHD's hole, thats a big freaking hole, geez, unbelievably you fixed that yourself!
