Good project ski?

I had a 2004 GTI (Blue) and the family loved it... very stable but a little under powered if you wanted to tow a tuber... I think the larger engine in this one and fuel economy from the RFI is a good alternative. If you are doing the replacement/rebuild yourself, it's not bad... even if you pay $1500-2000 for a rebuilt engine that gets you into a 3 seater that has new motor for half what a 3 up spark would cost... and you get one that is way more stable IMO. My 2017 spark has had issues... so as far as reliability goes, a 2-stroke that is been rebuilt well is probably as good as a new spark... other 3 seaters are in the 3x price range.... so for good cheap fun, i think it's not a bad idea.

RFI's and DI's suck. They are not as simple or as serviceable as carbed models. It will require special programming tools on top of everything else. The word is out on them so many potential buyers stay away.

I bought an 04 GTI LE RFI with a blown crank a few months ago, then bought an 00 GTX rfi that blew the hull apart, swapped engines around and was going to ride it a bit and sell it off.
Wife took it out it and told me no way, she absolutely loves it and I'm not allowed to sell it.
Since then, we've taken it out on some pretty long cruises (one 60+ mile ride, and one 100+ mile of just cruising Truman lake) and I must admit, i'm surprised by how much I have ended up liking it. The fuel mileage is excellent, the ride is buttery smooth, and with the both of us riding it'll gps at 57. The biggest plus of that is after buying the two busted skis, putting one together and selling off just a few parts, I am $200 into it (and still have the 00 RFI pump and MPEM)
I liked it enough that I bought an 05 project.

RFI's are decent reliable ski that give very little problems, yes you will have to have a scanner to work on it if it breaks, the DI on the other hand is a beast to work on even with a scanner.

Thanks everyone for the comments. Sounds like we have mixed opinions, and I may lean toward taking the risk on this one in the off chance that I can buy it for like $400 or so. Pending wife approval...

Thanks again!
