fuel lines and bilge pump questions

We have a 1995 GTS SeaDoo Bombardier that we just purchased and want to change the fuel lines. My husband says they are the grey Tempo lines that everyone says you need to replace, but they look tan to me. In any event, we are changing them. Is this something you would advise a newbie to do, or should we pay to have it done?

Also, how in the heck do you mount a bilge pump to the ski? We are very leary of drilling holes in the hull. And yes we know that there is a built in bilge that works while the ski is in motion, however, we will be using this ski as a fishing platform and therefore will be sitting still for long periods at a time. We want to make sure we have a bilge in case we begin to take on water while fishing.

Thanks for any information.

Starting with the bildge....

If the drive shaft seal is in good condition... you shouldn't take on that much water. I personally wouldn't worry about it... but, if you want to add one, I would epoxy it down by the driveshaft. It's going to get it as low as possible.

As far as drilling the hole in the hull... Just buy the fitting, and do it. It's not really a big deal. BUT... since you will be sitting... either put it above the water line, or put a check valve in the hose going to it. If it's below the waterline, you will take on water.

The Tempo lines. Yes... replace them. The reason they look tan is because they are decaying.

Do not pay someone to do it. It's easy. Go buy 25' of black rubber fuel hose (1/4" od) from the auto parts store, and change them one at a time. (you will also want to buy about a dozen hose clamps too)

Dr. Honda,

Thanks a bunch for your advice...appreciate it! We are going to go for it with replacing the fuel lines. But my hubby is concerned on how to get to the ones that go inside the gas tank...any advice on this?....anyone?

none of the hoses go "Inside" the gas tank. They all hook up to the pick-up tube assembly.

OK..what about the fuel pump? Is it inside the gas tank? If not, how do we go about priming the gas when we are finished with the fuel lines?

The fuel pump is in the Mag carb, and you don't have to prime the system. It will draw fuel as you crank.

Again, Dr. Honda, thank you for your advice. My hubby wanted to clarify on the size of the fuel lines...is it 1/4'' OD or 1/4" ID? He says the ID is 1/4" and the OD is almost 1/2" on the lines in our SeaDoo...

1/4 inside is fine, I have my bilge pushing out using 1/2 cpvc tubing and my pump is right next to the exhaust curve going out into the pump tunnel opposite the speedo wheel. Also clean out the selector switch, to avoid many mix ups drop a dot of nail polish on the rubber and the fitting, one color for each tube.
