fuel baffle question

I ordered new fuel baffles for my machines. The part numbers for both have been superseded. On the '97 GTI, the old number was 275500318, and the new number is 275500470.
The 'vent' and 'return' are backwards between the two. I carefully labeled the lines as I took them off based on the markings on the outside of the baffle...yet the line labeled 'return' actually ran to the outside vent, and the 'vent' line ran to 'return' on the baffle, on the old baffle.
Surely the these two lines aren't interchangeable, are they? To further confuse the issue, there is a little tab on the fuel baffle on the 'vent' side on the new one, yet this tab is on the 'return' labeled port on the old one. Is it possible that the old, original baffle was mis-labeled?

You can pop the bottom off the baffle. Look in it. On is a tube that goes three quarters down. Res goes all the way to the bottom. Vent and return exit near the top.

Thanks!
The 'on' and 'reserve' were the same but 'vent' and 'return' just opposite. After going back and reading thru some old posts, it seems they are interchangeable. I hooked up the hoses per the outlets on the new baffle; it starts and runs fine.

Glad it is working for you. I am having troubles and am wondering about your situation. My 1996 GTX was hooked up with the vent going to RETURN nipple and return going to the VENT nipple. When I changed my gray lines and put in a new tank (under recall/warranty) - all lines are verified correct and this time i hooked up the fuel lines according to the proper nipples as labelled on the baffle. Now when it is hot out I am getting gas coming out the pressure relief vent on the underside of my rub rail. I only have 1/4 tank of gas so this should not be happening. See this thread http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?78320-gas-coming-out-of-vent-under-rub-rail

I have tried looking up the forums you mentioned about the two nipples - vent and return, being interchangeable but I can't find those forums - could you post a link?. I too wonder if my baffle is mislabeled, or if the previous owner took it apart and reassembled wrong so the nipples are not correct. I am just leery of opening it all up again and pulling the tank again.

I guess I don't have and answer for you. The vent and return do just return to the top of the baffle. Only the res and ON have tubes that go down inside the baffle.

But you have me puzzled. Your tank was included in the recall? I did not think a 96 GTX was involved in that. Did you get it from a dealer?

Sorry - typo. I have a 1995 GTX. Yes the dealer installed a brand new tank for me under warranty late last week.

so switching the vent and Return lines on the baffle would have absolutely no difference? Is there any length difference ? And no check valves inside the baffle?

Below is from another forum:

1 1/4 line leaving the baffle is a vent, the other is the return, you can switch these and it won't matter. the 2 5/16 lines are run and reserve. Its written on the side of the baffle. Both run and reserve go to the selector. One line leaves the selector, goes to the filter, and then to the carbs. Its that simple.

Very interesting. I fixed my fuse in my baffle and putting it back. I had a map before I took it apart. Then I saw the label the baffle. Vent and Ret are were reversed. LoL.
And by looking at the structure, they have no difference which one is which. Probably it was reversed at the manufacturer.
I will put it the way the label says :)
Again, they are interchangeable.
