First thanks for everyones continued help. Which brings me to my next problem with this boat we recently purchased. I pulled the carbs apart for the surging problem and found the basket plugged on the pto carb. Was happy to find it and put it back together for a test. Hooked up the hose and it ran really good better than ever. Then I noticed a water leak from between the jug and lower half of engine. Slightly unhappy but confident I could fix after reading many post and looking at the repair manuals. So I dis-assembled the engine and am now ready to take a hole saw to the hull and float it out on lake erie! Here is what I have it is a 717 motor that has silver jugs and a worn pto piston. The mag side cylinder is perfect but under closer inspection it seems that the sleeve as replaced with a 0020 one and the pto one is standard. So just wondering if any one has had any luck with a cheap fix on something like this?

I'm not getting what you are asking. You said it was running OK... but now you want to replace the top end?

Having 2 different sized pistons/jugs isn't the best thing to do... but it will run fine. If you are seeing some piston skirt scars... those are OK too on an older engine.

Since you had a base leak... just replace the gasket, and go have fun. (make sure to use the right thickness gasket)

Sorry if I wasn't clear with my question I was on kind of a rant from my finds. My question was if the scarring was normal wear if it was ok to have two different size pistons in the engine. I just kinda freaked out when one looked perfect and the other did not. I know the engine was ran lean due to the carb being plugged but we did not run it long on it. Your right it ran good i just need to fix the leak and forget about it. Thanks for the re-assurance. I look forward to being able to help other s
