Fired the engine for the first time after a full rebuild. All new seals, o rings and gaskets. Took a few cranks to prime the fuel lines but she fired up and idled for about 10 seconds then cut out. Second attempt took a bit longer but started again then cut off after about 25 seconds. idle was low about 1500, but was steady. Pulled out to the drive way to get her on the hose. Cranked again no fire, pulled the choke a bit, nothing. Next attempt to start got a huge backfire that scared the hell out of my dog and brought a few neighbors out lol. I waited a few minutes tried again and it fired right up, this time idle is jumpy between 1500 and 2000, turned the hose on and got the water out the pee hole , but also realized i have a bit of water leaking from the gasket where the manifold meets the pipe. killed the water, ran another 10 seconds then killed the engine. Noticed a bit of smoke coming from the rave valves so i popped the caps and find that the backfire blew the spring clips off the bellows.Actually broke one of them.

Is the leaky gasket and one rave without the spring the reason for my inconsistent idle?

Ski started it up right away a bunch of times after that, i just didn't let it run for more than 5 to 10 seconds. Idle was never steady again.
