hey guys well getting the last problems worked out of my skis, well today the one that usually runs great every single time gave me a few problems it was almost like the battery was dead it didnt seem to want to start at all in the water? so i pulled it on trailer backwards were the jet pump was outa water and it would fire up in a second and i would drive off and it would do great, i could turn it off on water and it would fire back up but then if i got off for a while it seemed like i just could not get it to start in the water?? so got home n checked battery and i got 12.6v coming from it so i guess its not battery.

well my next ski was doing great last time, but it started bogging down at full throttle so i swapped it to reserve and it did great after that so i after that i bypassed fuel selector and all the lines are like new so i went to autozone and picked up 2 1/4 inch inline filters and threw them on both skis. well it did really good almost the entire first tank of gas till close to the end it started acting up again and kinda bogging at times mainly on full throttle the fuel filters i used were tiny and had like a stone it had to go threw could it be those are letting air or not enough fuel in or what? idk if i should go threw carbs or what but they were rebiult not to long ago as well as all new fuel lines so were do i start guys

Hi Brandon,

I think the gas filters you bought are too small, they look like they're made for a lawn mower. I don't think they are providing enough flow.

The filters I got this year are Hastings GF95.

Yep... without a doubt... they are too small to support 110 HP. Also, the bronze sintered element was meant to be used in a pressure system. (about 7 to 10 psi) since you are trying to suck though it... it is going to be hard to do.

This is what I use. It's a 5/16" fitting... but it will go into the 1/4" hose of a seadoo. I found the same thing at Advance Auto with a 1/4" fitting... but I don't have the part number in front of me.

Walmart has a Fram gas filter about the same size with 1/4" fittings, looks just like the one Tony uses.

Okay thanks guys so u think that filter was just slowing my gas down? I'm gunna replace filters n try it next time and see if that was my only problem before pulling Carbs and all.

I didn't know it was post to use the paper filter that is why u went w the stone one n it was just out in the aisle prob for a mower or tractor lol.

I know this is probably the wrong place to ask it, but how do i post a new thread with my own question? Sorry im new to the website :L

Just go to the top of this page, click on Home, pick the forum, and start new thread.

Hey Dr I got those filters today and went Back out to the lake. Works great again!!!!!! I grabed the gps from my truck n held it n it was saying 50-52 on both n water was semi smoothe is that good?

Only thing on my wifes xp after it sits for a while its a Bugger to get started again it will start n idle rough n die. Play w it for a min and its back alive would that be needles n seats?

how's the wear ring? Hows the compression? 52 is good... but you should be getting closer to 55/56.

Do you have the stock impeller back in? are you running an aftermarket intake grate?

Yep... sounds like the needle is leaking just a little. DO you have OEM diaphragms in it?

Also... once you clear out the engine... will it idle? If it is still rough, and dies... try rasing the idle just a little, and turn the low speed adjuster IN about a 1/16th of a turn.

where are you guys installing these filters, on the feed line right before the carb?

Yep... just cut the hose, and put it in the feed line. On the XP, I put it close to where the oil filter is.

Hey Dr thanks for the reply the filters fit good and my compression is 155,155 on one and 140,135 on the other. Both are doing about same speed both have good wear rings and both have oem Carbs parts. Once it is cleared out and all it idles great and will not give me prob again till I let it sit for about 20 min

But I also can back it up on trailer n it will fire up easer without a load on it. Both have brand new plugs as well. Stock impeller n grate on both skis. And full batteries. I'm fine w the speed its fast n fun n water was a little rough I am just wanting to do all I can to keep em running lol.

okay so i went back out to them today since i have not checked compression in a while and i checked mine and it had 155 and 155 i checked the wifes and it was 140 and about 135 or a little higher, id like to see it higher but if it will make it threw the summer ill do a topp end over the winter. but out on the lake the xp with the 135 is neck n neck with the other one so it must not be affecting much, i went ahead and fogged them good since it will be about 2 weeks since i get to go back out.

So you do think it is needles in seats for my hard starting? on the trailer the thing will fire right up and idle good, and in the water the first time it starts right up to and does good, i can kill it on the water and push start and it fires right back up its just if i leave it for a bit. ive finnally had 3 outings though without any big problems, just normal maintnence so far so id like to keep it that away lol..

Yep... if they leak a little... it will lightly flood the engine, and makes it hard to start, and it takes a good hard rev (with a load) to clear it out.

The other thing it could be is your return is plugged. (not very common)

Honestly... 140/135 is OK still. You could hit the cyl with a quick hone (just to rough it up) and put in a new set of rings. If you do it early... then you don't damage the pistons. Low compression, and blow-by is what eats the pistons. (assuming nothing else is wrong)

Okay thanks Dr for all your help n advice. I will get me a set of 1.5 needles comming and see if my problem is gone. I will blow threw return line and see if it feels resrictred. But after putting those filters everything seemed better and I feel safer lol. How often would you change them? And is there any type of additive I can run everynow n then to just go threw everything like seafoam?? All our gas here has ethanol

There is a restrictor in each or the carb returns. That's where you will want to check. (You can do that when you replace the N/S)
