Fast Idle on 96 GSX

Thanks again for everyone's input on the steering challenge I've been fighting. I've not given up on that but have another issue that I need to try and correct before this weekend.

The idle on water is 2,300+ RPM when the engine is warm and around 1,700 when cold. The 2,300 is too high and is throwing a big enough wake to make docking rather difficult and I'm sure to be in trouble in a no wake area.

I've done a fair amount of searching and I'm hoping for some advice on slowing the idle. I see the throttle cable wrap around the "wheel" on the front of the engine. It looks like there is a bolt there but I'm not confident it's in good condition and I'm afraid it will be damaged if I try to take it off to adjust the cable.

By chance does anyone have any thoughts on adjusting the idle down without taking that component apart?

Thanks again!!!

Idle out of the water should be 3,000 rpm and in the water 1,400 rpm.

I know you know this, but you typed it backwards. In water roughly 1400, on trailer roughly 3000. <--thats what you taught me.

That's above and beyond but much appreciated! From the looks of the placement I'm going to have fun getting my hands in there. lol!

On second look, those screws aren't being labelled the nicest and it's a bit hard to see in the diagram.
You want to turn the one that adjusts where wheel stops. If you move something that doesn't you will want to put it back to where it was (as that would be changing your lean/rich settings on your high or low).

It will be 33 or 59. (32 is definitely high speed adjustment)

Either way, were talking about this guy correct?

I'm not 100% sure. You have a different carb then I do. It will be 33 or 59. Look at both, as you turn it, it will turn the same thing the throttle cable does (just very slowly). The other one will adjust fuel internally.

No, Its 59. pay close attention to where the dotted line goes....you can see 59 actuates 60...so you want 59.

You kind of have to zoom in to see.

Silly of them to make the diagram like that to have the dotted line get mixed up with the edges of the parts AND have it on the opposite side.

Incase you still can't find it...
If you have 2 carbs, the adjustment will be only on one.

The adjustment does NOT go internally.

It will look like this (you see it on the right side of the picture).
This may or may not be your carb, just using it as an example.

The idle screw is actually somewhat hidden. If you follow the fuel inlet line into the front carb, behind the cable bracket you can usually feel the tee handle.
You can see it here going down towards the cable wheel.

Haha, double post but Triorieel was faster.

Ok guys, here are a couple images and I'm not seeing the idle screw as expected by the diagrams.

Am I blind? Lol

the carb(s) are on the side of the engine, you are looking at the end of the engine. I think your carbs are on the starboard (right) side when looking at the seadoo from the stern (rear).

My carbs (on a different engine) are under exhaust pipe.

Under the airfilter...got it.

My engine is flipped compared to yours, I know I don't have to remove anything to get to the idle screw, I just push the rubber flap out of the way. This may or may not be the same in your situation.

Edit: seems to be different. I guess ignore this message

So I noticed and you can see in the picture that the nut and washer on the throttle cable was loose. I just thumb tightened it. I ran the ski (on hose) and it was running at 6,500 RPM before tightening and now its running at 3,300 RPM. Could that have been the issue all along?

Yes, that last picture is it.You need to adjust the throttle cable so there is about 2mm of slack in it at the throttle lever before it starts to pull.

Also as said previously your oil pump on the front of the engine is out of adjustment.

I also see that you are missing the carg brace and you need to get that on ASAP so it doesn't crack your intake manifold.

Good job on having the correct oil and no grey fuel lines.

Your small oil lines from the pump to the intake are original and should be replaced too as they break and then the engine doesn't have any oil.
