i am rebuilding my 787 because my counter balance shaft gear is completly grinded down on the gear . i have a new balance shaft on the way but i got wondering, how is my crankshaft. if my crankshaft gear is shot can i get a new gear or do i have to get a completely new crankshaft?

If there is that much damage... I would replace the crank. The new seals that come with it will also be beneficial.

say i dont have enough money to replace the crank, would i be able to just replace the gear on it? i am waiting for my flywheel puller to come in the mail so i can take the caseings off to figure out the real damage. i bought new caseings and a new balance shaft

technically, yes, the gear can be replaced but the crank must be split by a machine shop and then properly pressed back together and after it's all said and done, replacing the crank with a rebuilt one will only cost you a little more.

damm.... ok ummm should i buy a used one or a new one??

Rebuilt, from a reputable company. NEVER, put in a used crank. If someone is parting out an engine... you don't know why it failed. AND... if the engine was good... they would sell it as a compleat engine.

ok, easy enough, my next question is he caseings and the counter balance shaft are used, parted out from an engine. did i do the right thing?
