engine serial number

Can anyone tell me where to go to get an engine serial number decoded or if it can be done- I have a 2004 GTI with 717 engine, the engine has spit a rod bearing - my buddy in calli has a type 717 engine with Serial number M4726187 - white in colour but he doesnot know what year or what it even came out of - Iam thinking that it will probably fit but would like to have amore definite opinion before I spend the money - he says the motor looks brand new - he believes it came out of a unit that was damaged in a car accident Any help would be greatly appreciated THANKS steve

There will be a tag on your motor, or there should be one.

Any 717 will work...you get hooked up from ur buddy, then pay ship'n,..could be better to find something local?
