Engine interchange 657

I have a 95 GTX with a 657 which I just removed from the ski. Can anyone tell me what other engine sizes (and preferably years) would drop back in its place, assuming that any new engine comes with the correct mpem and other electrical parts? Mostly I was wondering what else would match the motor mount patterns and work with the driveshaft.....

Thanks, I was hoping to hear that. I plan on rebuilding the 657 eventually, but if I can arrange to buy a complete powerplant in the meantime I'd prefer to do that, so I won't be in a hurry. I sure hope to stay out of the mixing and matching electronics world.

Ok, follow-up question....what about a 587? Am I correct in understanding that the only difference is the cooling system, and is that something that can be modified/changed without any ridiculous headache?

Yes if you get a good deal on a 587 then we could talk you through getting it fitted. It would be ideal to get the inpeller that was pitched to the 587 as well as the electronics. Many times there are throttle and choke cable differences. It's great to find a cheap donor ski so all those little things are covered.

yes the diameter and the splines are the same but the lengths are different from ski to ski.

ok thanks. So a given driveshaft is really only suitable for a given hull design? Also, looking at the shop manual, it appears that I need an alignment tool to put this all back together. Is that a no-kidding, drop-dead, got-to-have or is there something else that people use? I've tried searching old threads but I haven't really gotten the knack of this search engine yet.

I had been more of less assuming my 657 engine was bad, but I tested the compression today and the MAG cylinder was 125 and the PTO cylinder was 75. So now I'm trying to decide between 1) just looking for an engine to interchange (seems like there are a lot of 580s and 587s available in this area), 2) rebuild the top of the engine, or 3) rebuild the entire engine. Any quick thoughts?

The 95 gtx has a 657x which is a direct swap for the 717 for a few extra ponies.

That hull will take any of the uprights. I was invloved with a 717 swap to a 93 GTX and it was pretty smooth.

I have to say though, depending on how much money you want to spend, we could have bought a running 96 GTi which is that hull and 717 for a little more.

That is if you can find one.

If you have access to one (a 717) then by all means.

Thanks OldSchool. I'm not necessarily looking for any more horsepower, just trying to avoid getting myself into a mess trying to interchange things that won't fit. I've been shopping locally but haven't found a setup I thought was good yet. Did you use the mpem from the 717 when you put it into the 93?

We used everything from the 717 except the trim motor and the hose to the water box.
