Just wondering if there are any easy inexpensive tricks I can do to my 97 XP to get it really going. I runs good now but acording to the speedo I get 40-45.

787....?

My boat, which is heavier than your ski, can go that fast.

I'd check the clearance on the wearing ring. Maximum clearance is .040". Anything over that is bad...............

What about an intake grate? do they serve a purpose other than keep stuff out of the impeller?

:agree: Do this and a new neoprene seal. If your impeller is good you should gain 10 mph as long as your rpms are close to 7000

Ok. I was looking at the parts page. I see the wear ring but what seal are you talking about. Wanting to order the parts.

The repair manual says max is .040" and mine is under that. The impeller a little nicked up on the edges though.

if you have a bronze pump, you might wanna try a plastic one. the stator vanes are much smoother and cleaner than bronze. if you are maxing out revs and only doing 40 to 45 there is a problem in the pump. that ski at 7000 should be going close to 60. does vts still work? if not, you can trim ski by removing the trim motor and adjusting it up or down. then reinstall the motor to keep it in place. a little above the center of travel is a good starting point.

Yeah the vts does work and I have a bronze pump. Im not sure if it is reving out. No tach. I did find that someone was in the water valve that mounts on the water tank. It was out of adjustment and the diaphram spring was laying in the hull. I put it back together and adjusted it according to the manual.

Ok ended up being the spring for the water valve. 50-60 mph according to the speedo.:hurray:

Great to hear! That XP should be moving as fast as most modern Skis. For a 96, they cant be beat!

My 97 GTX did something similar yesterday...
would max out at about 25-30 MPH seemed like i had high rpms 6-7K.
then later on fixed itself...

Where and what is this spring valve? (I am PWC dumb but I am mechanically inclined. Just have never worked on a PWC )

according to the parts guide your 97 gtx doesn't have the valve. It would be on top of the muffler.

easy speed
1 fill in the rideplate holes.
2. trim out some of the reverse bucket if it looks like it is hanging into the jet stream

What can I do to get more bootom end? I've got good top end but taking off could be faster. low revs out of the hole untill you get up to speed.

it is a trade-off. these guys have 1-speed transmissions. and a water-filled torque converter. if you go shorter pitch, you will get a better hole-shot, and lose top speed. like putting 4.88 gears in your chebby. better quarter mile times but no highway speed.
