Dropping rev's

This last weekend, my son riding our '97 GTX started experiencing a loss of RPM's As soon as he woiuld hit 6500 rpm's, it would drop off to between 3000-3500, then start picking up again. Owners manual says the rev limiter is set for 7200. As long as he stayed below 6500, it ran fine, but at 6500 it would drop then speed up again.
A service tech I know thinks the computer is sensing a problem and dropping the rev's to prevent damage. Or it might be a failing rectifier.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this same situation, what the problem was and how much the fix was?

jswope...you posted earlier, how ur own countless numbers of tanks of fuel, but have yet to add oil, right?

Pull the raves and clean them, and also, what gsxgtxman said.

So you're saying it should be using more oil than it is? I guess I've never been concerned about the low oil usage because it's always run great until this recent situation with the dropping rev's. I will do as you suggest.
