drive shaft help.

The o-ring on my drive shaft looks to be deteriorating its #39 in the pic on the left side third image down So can I just take out the o-ring and replace it with the new style circlip that most have now instead of taking the whole drive shaft and all out?

Someone has had to have removed there drive shaft before.

I don't think what I am asking is anything out of the ordinary. I would just like some input of what other ppl have done.
