Does a new ECU need to be flashed?

The dealer said my ECU is bad and I need a new one, and he told me if i found one on ebay, he would put it in and flash it for close to $200. Question is, if I get a used one with keys, does it really need to be flashed, or can I just put it in? Doesnt seem that difficult, and I understand if I were keeping my same keys. If I can get away with using the keys that come with it, i wondered if I could save that money. Thanks!

Yes it needs to be flashed by the dealer for it to work properly. While you may be able to start and run without a flash you will most likely not have a working gauge cluster and your HR meter will be off.

If you are referring to your 2003 4tec, then the answer is "no" the ECU doesn't have to be married or flashed to your LCD gauge. Just put it in and use the keys that were programmed to it or program new ones. The 2007 or so and newer ones do need to be married. So, it sounds like your dealer is ripping you off. I'm not sure I would believe him if he is saying your ECU is bad. Anyway, it takes all of 10 minutes to marry the LCD and ECU. I normally do it for free if it is a returning customer or a minimal charge but it does require BUDS.

If you send me your ECU and keys, I can program them for a $20 + shipping.

and page 27, where it tells you to put some of the old data into the replaced ECU, all of which is not really necessary. it will just have all of the old information including fault history from the used ECU. While it is good practice to do this and to update the part replacement history, I don't know of any dealer that religiously actually does this, including myself. It will work perfectly, trust me, have done it many times.

Ski-doo, doesn't he have to transfer the info from the old ECU to the new one?

Can he accomplish the task with the Candoo Pro?

So, let's say his old ECU is showing 100 hours on the ECU, and the used one he's going to install has 150. How would he go about changing the hours so the one he's installing shows 100 hours?

Dneon95, I recently purchased a Candoo Pro (Well worth the price), and I know you can register keys and manually update the EUC/update data, clear faults, etc.... I'm just not sure if it can modify engine hours. I haven't had to do mess with that.

You can not modify or change the total hours. If a person had a Megatech license (which seadoo dealers don't have) with BUDS, they could reset the ECU as new with 0 hours but they couldn't change it from 150 to 100 hours. CanDoo won't change total hours either, only reset maintenance hours.
