Do the steering cables need any maintenance?

The steering cable on my 97 challenger is still working great and I would like to keep it that way because it really looks like a pain to replace. Do they need any maintenance, can they be greased or is that pointless since you can only get the little amount at both ends, my sea ray has a grease fitting in the cable itself
 
I would lift the seals... and shoot some silicone oil into it once it a while.

It's not a bad idea to pull the boot back once in a while, just to get the water out.
