Do front motor mounts need to be removed to pull stator on 96xp

Ohm tested my stator yesterday. It was reading 19.8 between the yellow wires. I believe this is what was causing an overcharging issue and battery to get warm. I got a new used stator from my local mechanic to try and install today. I’ve read the front motor mounts need to be removed to get to the bottom bolts. Is this a neccisity? I would rather not as I’ve never done it and not sure how hard it is to realign and shim. Just trying to avoid something that could cause more issues.

what engine?

On the 787 you can detach the front of the motor from the mount (leaving the rear two connected) and lift the front of the engine only to get at the bottom two bolts on the housing. Not sure if this is the case with your ski or not.

The 787 only has one front motor mount that has to be removed to get to the stator.

And yes, any time you mess with the motor mounts you should check the alignment.

Ok I’m going to see if my girlfriends little hands can get in there to get to the bottom bolts so I don’t have to remove the mounts. I have no idea how to realign the engine and do the shims:/ I don’t want to create a bigger headache then I already have on my hands haha

But if he just undoes the front one and leaves the shims wouldn't he still be aligned after if he doesn't touch the rear?

Not playing devil's advocate, just genuinely curious.

Actually no, they will move enough to be out of alignment. I have seen quite a few that are out just from the hulls flexing and settling over the years too.

It is a 787. Will removing the front two motor mounts cause any alignment issues?

It's only one motor mount. Make sure the back two bolts (PTO End) and foot bolts are tight prior to removing the front mount. and block the MAG side of the engine with a piece of wood. Be gentle. Pry the engine straight up and put a block of wood under the engine (try to keep the engine the same height or close) If all you are doing is removing the front cover you won't put enough side load to move the engine. Just be cognizant of that. I line equipment up for a living and I've lined up the motors in a couple of skis to get them on the gnats azz. Clean your shims really good before you reinstall. You'll be Okie Dokie. Nothing wrong with checking the alignment but it is a pain in the butt for such a small job. The thing to remember is that with 4 foot bolts if you lock down any two, the alignment won't be affected very much if at all when you add or take away shims. I'm talking a couple thousands of an inch. The alignments on these skis using the equipment they recommend is not very good to begin with.

Who says it is lined up properly as is anyway ?? LOL I This is the part you want to get at. Also clean the tip of the pick up coil. :) Good Luck !!

Hey thank you for the reply that doesn’t sound to bad. I’m reading it’s like an hour job which isn’t bad. I’ll plan on 4 hours since I work slowly and diligently hahaha.

Best way to work my brother. I peck around on everything. If it doesn't look right, I fix it. :) If you have a lot of corrosion on the inside of the housing I'll give you the hook up on painting it with Glyptol and how I prepped it.
See the blue mark? Mark that stator before you remove it to replace. Mark the new one exactly the same.

My local mechanic is a buddy of mine. He sold me this stator today. Not sure what I should do to clean it up. I would ask him for help but he stays busy with business. He knows I like working on these things too so it’s kind of nice not having money or playing blame game getting in the way but he is always helpful with parts and passing knowledge along. I’d rather have the mistakes be my own and blame myself when it breaks then point fingers.

I will pull my mag cover off and pull my oil injector since I know it’s good. Put it on his cover with his stator and just make the process easier. Then give him his injector and my cover back. He had a pig tail and ohm tested this stator and it checked out! Can’t beat it for $20 haha

I removed that front cover last week on my xp. I believe u have to raise the engine and remove that front mount. Hope someone corrects me and I am wrong so I don't have to do it next time. Enlighten me. But on my xp that lower bolt was actually shorter than all the rest making it easier to extract. Did the PO do that? Or seadoo?
