Was just wondering if anyone happens to know if there is a difference between the 717/720 model and 657x. Pretty much Im looking more at the pistons as to what difference there is. I have an xtra 657x motor with everything needed to run and then have a 717 gti that needs a new top end. Basically if I could just swap the motors and not have much of a power loss I would rather do that.

Deck height is different...

Actually... there is a lot different, and the parts generally interchangeable.

There are a few minor parts that can be swapped but for the most part they are different animals. I have 2 657x's and 2 720's. While the 657's are a hair faster they are much higher strung were as the 720's are milder and IMO will last longer in the end.

Hi Joaquin,

I can send you the parts catallog and the service manual of 1995, propably this will help you to find the parts interchangeables.
lookslike the short block is different but there are some parts similar.

The 657x has hotter spark than the 720. There will be five wires going into the 657x and four to the 717. If you use the smaller engine then you should switch the stator and flywheel. Now you still would have a impeller pitch issue though.

Sorry.......... I just re-read your post above. I thought you wanted to swap the Top-ends.

If you want to do an engine swap... you can. Depending on what X engine you have... you will probably need the CDI/coil for the "X"... or you can swap the stator and flywheel from the 720 on to the X... and use the 720 electronics.

I've been where you are at now and I read that it did not work. So I did what I suggest to you now. First mark the flywheels so you know what came from what. But then line them up with the ring gear facing upward and both key slots pointing at 12 o'clock. Now run a little metal tuning screw driver or allen wrench(anything metallic) along the inside of the circle and note where you feel the magnet grab. It will be in different locations. Light billet performance flywheels of the day had two slots so they could be used with either system. You could use the flywheel if you swapped the stator and the other electronics as well.
