I went to my dealer today to re-program a 96 XP MPEM for a new key. While they were trying to program they would get an error on the MPEM programmer. I don't know any additional info on it, such as if it gave an error code, etc.
The XP fully works. The only thing originally wrong was the magnet in the lanyard suprisingly died or lost magnetism and won't engage the reed switch in the DESS post. If I take a small permanent magnet and hold it next to the lanyard, the electronics turn on and I can start it.
The shop gave two excuses:
1. The battery was dead. It turned over, and the starter motor would never turn over if the battery is even slightly dead. This is when I lost confidence in their knowledge.
2. The DESS post is bad. I don't think so, since its only a reed switch and fully works when I hold the magnet next to it. I also have an additional DESS post, and confirmed that the original problem is the lanyard magnet.
However, the electronics (the LEDs and gas gauge) did not turn on when they plugged the programmer in. Is it supposed to? If so, it would point to the DESS post as they suggested.
Hope someone can help.
