Correct starter?

My 2003 GTI (bought used) suddenly stopped starting last year and I assumed a tooth on the flywheel broke off, but when I took it in to the dealership (for a different issue) they informed me that the bendix had snapped off. It has 9 splines, which as far as I can tell is correct for the engine in the 03 GTI. But, the dealership said it was supposed to have an 8 splined starter, and that could have been a reason it snapped off. My question is, Is it possible that before I bought the GTI, the original flywheel was replaced with one that requires a starter with only 8 splines? or is the dealership mistaken? I would like to order a new starter as soon as possible, but I want to make sure I get the correct one. The rain has finally let up, so when I get a chance I will go out and count the number of teeth on the flywheel. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks,

I just counted the number of teeth on the flywheel and it's 77. I'm not sure how that translates into the number of teeth required for the starter to engage properly? Does anybody know if this is the correct flywheel for this model? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks,
Shawnjd
