correct battery size ?

I have 99 challenger 1800 with twin 787. It ran great all last year and I started it several times throught the winter. I live in texas and keep in the garage. Last month I went to start it and it would not turn over. Pulled the battery and had it tested it showed to have a bad cell so I bought a new one. I installed it but now it will not turn offer it trys to but just gives one Clunk cycle like there is not enough power. I removed the spark plugs and the it will turn off like it suppose to but when I put plugs back in I get the one clunk sound from the starter. it is like there is not enough power to turn over the starters? New Battery shows 12v any Ideas.

Your post is a little broken, and hard to follow.

Did you install a new battery? Did you charge it? Just because it's new, and showing 12v... it doesn't mean it has a full charge.

Also... check over all the connections on the battery cables. (at the battery, the starter, solenoid, and the ground) When the boat sits over winter... the connections can corrode, and make bad connections.

sorry about that I have gone back and corrected the posting.

all the connects are solid and I have checked the terminals there is no sign of corrosion. The engine turns over with out the plugs but not with them in.

Well... I'd still say to put the new battery on a charger. You don't know how long it's been sitting on the shelf at the store. Also... if you are checking the battery with a volt meter... what does the voltage drop to when you hit the start button?


One last question. When you get the "Thump" from the starter... does the electronics restart, and beep at you? If they do... the battery voltage is dropping with a load.

If you know for a fact that the battery is fully charged, and the wires are all clean... then it's time for a new starter.
