I was just curious if any of you have ever tried one of those polishing clay bar things on your boat? Or even your vehicles for that matter. I have heard good things about them and have thought about trying it on my boat. I have some scratches on my boat I would like to get rid of. I thought about that or the Mother's powerball. I thought I saw they have a paint version now.

It should work, but clay bars are NOT for polishing. You need a polish for that.

Clay bars are for cleaning only.

They slide across the surface and pick up impurities that are stuck to your paint or clear coat.

But they won't polish.

Work good on glass, too.

I did some grinding on a set of small block heads and the hot metal dust stuck to the fender of my truck. A couple days later, the dust started to rust and my fender looked like crap.

Clay bar pulled all that rust dust right up off the clear coat!

scooper is right on. if your boat has gelcoat a good buffing is what it needs it will look like new, i use seasense marine polish from wally world(wm) its good and cheap, then follow up with a good meguiars wax to seal it.

Marine.

I've tried auto polishes and didn't like the results. So I tried Marine type and
found it works better. The key is in the temperature of the wheel and surface.
Gelcoat is much harder and marine grade polishes are more aggressive.
Just My 2 cents worth.
Good Luck and Have Fun!

I'll throw in my 2 cents....

As above, clay bars are for removing dirt and oxidized paint from... paint.

We have gel coat on our boats. It's thick and hard. You can use sand paper on it to remove stains, and buff the crap out of it with very aggressive compounds to re-polish.
