I just got a new speed sensor today and I wanted to check it before installing it. I spliced the existing plug and connected the voltage sensor. purple wire had 12 volts, black wire had the exact same voltage and voltage did not change by spinning wheel. My speedometer did not increase speed either. Is it possible that the new speed sensor is bad?

The speed sensor works on resistance. Here is some information on checking the sensor:Spedo restiance
For the Speedo on the rear of the boat is a sender that uses a little wheel with 3 wires. 2 are for the the speed, and 1 is for temp. if your boat is equiped with the temp. quage. Using a multi meter attached to 2 of the wires, and spin the wheel you seed read restiance depending on how fast you spin the little wheel. Then check contunity on the wires to the guage. If it isn't reading it might be a broken wire. If it sends a signal to the guage, the guage is bad.

I did the test light test and the test light flickered, so I guess the sensor does work. I know that both speedometers work because they both would work at the same time sometimes. What else should I be checking?

I installed the new speed sensor with the new connectors and both speedometers work fine. :hurray: Now I just have to get it out on the water. Thanks for your help guys.

What does it mean when the speedo only intermittenly reads a speed?

My '97 GSX speedo only works some of the time now and the gauges basically just jump around every once in awhile. Mostly they stay still. The wheel on the back of the hull spins freely and is not broken. Will checking for resistance work? Any ideas on a ball-park cost to replace?

I had the same problem with mine. Replace the speed sensor and make sure that you also buy the 3 connectors for the new sensor cable. You can buy everything that you need from here.
